Security deposits

Limits and deadlines vary by state.

5 min read

Your security deposit protects the landlord against unpaid rent and damage beyond normal wear and tear.

Good to know

  • Many states limit how much a deposit can be
  • Most states set a deadline for returning it after you move out
  • Landlords usually must list any deductions
  • Normal wear and tear usually can't be deducted
  • Get a receipt for your deposit

Check your state's rules on your state attorney general's or housing agency's website. Fresh Start Corner isn't paid by any landlord, agent or company.
