How much rent can you afford?

The 30% guideline, and its limits.

5 min read

A common guideline is to keep rent to about 30% of your income before taxes. It's a starting point, not a rule.

Think about

  • Your take-home pay, not just your salary
  • Utilities, internet and renters insurance on top of rent
  • Commuting costs from each neighborhood
  • Debt payments and savings goals
  • Many landlords ask for income of about three times the rent
